pedal
maintenance
Overhauling pedals can be easy, depending on the pedal. They all consist of a spindle, bearings and bushings.
Below is how you can get a little more life out of your pedals. [specifically Crank Brothers' Candy pedal]
Crank Brothers does sell rebuild kits for their pedals but greasing the spindle is good for increasing the lifespan
as well as quieting a creaking/squeeking pedal.
Here's what you'll need to get the job done:
- 8mm socket
- 6mm allen wrench
- wide flat bladed screwdriver
- grease [Park Tool's Poly 1000]
- clean lint-free rags

Step 1:
Removal
Using a wide flat blade screwdriver, unscrew the end cap on the outboard end of the pedal. Once removed, you'll find
an 8mm lock nut inside. This nut holds the pedal body onto the spindle.
Using a 6mm allen wrench to hold the spindle, use an 8mm socket to unscrew the nut from the spindle. When the spindle is
pulled from the pedal, bearings or bushings may come out of the body with it. You should note the position of these, clean
them, regrease them and set them aside.
Step 2:
Reinstallation
The spindle may have rusty spots or built up areas of gunk. You should wipe this down and sand away any rusty spots. Do not
sand below the surface of spindle; only remove rough areas of rust. Next apply a coating of grease to the spindle, reinstall
any bushings or bearigns which came out of the pedal body. Then, takeing care, not to get any grease on the threads of the
spindle, reinstall the 8mm nut. Lastly, apply a light coating of grease to the end cap and reinstall it.
